Historic restoration in Zaltbommel

The city of Zaltbommel is surrounded by fortifications: a wide, tree-lined belt with wide canals that connect to the river Waal on the north side. One of those moats – the inner moat – was neglected, silted up and dried up for centuries, until there was no longer a moat at all.

Indeed, this piece of Zaltbommel has been used to dump trash in the past. To Van Schie the clean task of excavating under remediation conditions and turning it back into a moat.

The goal of this project was to return the inner moat to its original state, in such a way as to reconnect with the outer moat and thus with the Waal River. The water can now flow again and become part of the ecosystem in and around the park. It appears that this moat was used as a dumping ground until 1955. In those days, things were not so tight; you had to get rid of your waste somewhere. THEN in the canal.

Copper, zinc, lead and oil residues were found, as well as Maggi bottles. Yes, even a millstone. In itself no wonder, as there used to be a mill here. First, the trees had to be uprooted. Van Schie then performed the earthwork, applied soil remediation, ground drainage and sewer adjustments, and installed a culvert.

The contaminated soil was excavated to an acceptable depth, after which the embankment was covered with a clean thick clay layer. All commissioned by the Municipality of Zaltbommel, which also commissioned archaeological research first.
