Pontoon bridge for Sail Den Helder

SAIL Den Helder is an event that has been held every five years since 1993, usually simultaneously with the Navy Days. The entire history of (inter)national maritime shipping is then practically on display board-to-board. From windjammers or tall ships that had the wind in their sails centuries ago, to modern frigates and submarines that show their latest techniques here. Van Schie also did the latter with its latest type of pontoon bridge.

Since at least 350,000 visitors were expected again and the old naval dockyard is surrounded by water, additional access roads had to be created for the walking public, something that can usually be solved with average pontoon bridges.

But in this case the bridge had to have a navigable section, because the ‘brown fleet’ had to pass through and also for emergencies. This is no problem at all with the latest certified VSP pontoons. The middle section can be opened and closed at any time by means of a hinge construction, whereby the closing side of this type of bridge consists of two specially designed bridge pontoons (colored light gray in the illustration).

The lengths of the openable part and the floating abutments are variable. This means the system can be adapted to any location. Furthermore, the bridge is equipped with barriers to temporarily stop the public when the middle section is open.

As far as operating the bridge is concerned, this can be done with a specially developed electric drive, which can be connected to both shore power and a battery pack. In this way, the bridge can be operated emission-free, which is especially important in inner-city areas. In short, a pontoon bridge that is designed for the future.
