Projects
You can say so much…
But actions speak louder than words… That’s why we would like to show you what we are capable of. And, let’s not beat around the bush, that’s no small feat. We’re more than happy to showcase examples from each of our areas of expertise, giving you a glimpse into the projects we have taken on together with our clients.
Houseboat refloated
On the night of Jan. 4, extremely high water in the Meuse River near Maastricht caused an overflow dam to break, with dire consequences for local residents. A houseboat was swept away by the fast-flowing water and ended up against the bridge, which threatened to collapse as a result. After thorough investigation by the Department of Public Works and Idverde, a combination of Van Schie and Mammoet was finally commissioned to stabilize the bridge, level the bank and salvage the houseboat.
500th VSP770 Pontoon
No one in our company could have suspected that the revolutionary VSP770 pontoon would become such a great success. We hoped for it, but never expected that around the turn of the year the 500th pontoon would arrive at the gate in Mijdrecht to loud cheers. In fact, the number is already approaching six hundred.
Quay reinforcement in Utrecht
In the city of Utrecht is a tiny harbor bowl, separated from the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal only by a drawbridge. An important steel industry originated here at the time. The small harbor has a surrounding quay wall that needed to be renovated and reinforced.
Working in the court pond
Lots of things are happening in the heart of The Hague, on the banks of the Hofvijver, the seat of our government. The Binnenhof is largely undergoing reconstruction: the Lower House and the States General are being rebuilt, the Opperhof is open, machines are on the move, and building materials are being brought in and taken out. The offices and group rooms are deserted. All members of parliament are now functioning elsewhere. But not the construction masters, project managers, executors and their staff working on the Senate and Council of State buildings. They work in the Hofvijver from a pontoon island, a construction by Van Schie.
The bridge at Arkel
At the beginning of this year, a pontoon bridge lay across the Merwede Canal as a temporary replacement for maintenance on Arkel’s Rijksstraatweg bridge.
Lifting with care
Van Schie Crane Rental is increasingly being called upon to install residential units for the elderly who require care, known as informal care homes.
‘Krák!” said the bridge
It happened near Hellendoorn, the village that had just been declared the happiest place in the Netherlands. With the bridge over the Regge River, the residents were unfortunately out of luck. The bicycle bridge – right on the border between Twente and Salland – was already in poor condition due to overdue maintenance, but after overloading and harsh weather conditions, the wooden structure finally had to give in.
Dike reinforcement
Hansje Brinker had it easy. He only had to stick his thumb in the dike to prevent the land from being flooded. In the year 2023, dozens of specialized civil engineering contractors must work together to prevent the dikes from breaching and washing away everything we have all built.
Pontoon bridge for Sail Den Helder
SAIL Den Helder is an event that has been held every five years since 1993, usually simultaneously with the Navy Days. The entire history of (inter)national seafaring is practically board-to-board on display then. From windjammers or tallships that had the wind in their sails centuries ago, to modern frigates and submarines that show their newest techniques here. The latter was also done by Van Schie with its newest type of pontoon bridge.
Creative with bentonite
Suppose you want to build a house and the contractor has calculated that the foundation should consist of 36 concrete piles, 11 meters long. The concrete piles are already in place, the formwork is ready and the rebar is braided. Only the concrete floor remains to be poured. And then the municipality comes and says that the piles are one meter too deep in the ground.
On land, sea and air
This year marks exactly 50 years since the popular program first appeared on the tube. Back then it was still called ‘Fly out’. At Van Schie we look back with great pleasure on all those years that our company was allowed to take care of the construction of all the ‘wet’ locations.
Smart bypass
You probably know them: those little concrete bridges in the polder. High in the road surface and too narrow to pass each other by car. They last a hundred years, but eventually cracks and tears appear and something has to be done quickly. This was also the case on Demmerik, below Vinkeveen.
