Since at least 350,000 visitors were expected again and the old naval dockyard is all around in the water, there had to be additional access routes for the walking public, something that can generally be solved with average pontoon bridges. But in this case, the bridge had to have a navigable section, because the “brown fleet” had to pass through it and also for emergencies. With the latest certified VSP pontoons, this is no problem at all. The middle section can open and close at any time by means of a hinge construction, with the closing side in this type of bridge consisting of two specially designed bridge pontoons (colored light gray in the illustration). The lengths of the opening part and the floating abutments are variable. Thus, the system can be adapted to any location. Furthermore, the bridge is equipped with barriers to temporarily stop the public when the middle section is open.

Pontoon bridge for Sail Den Helder
SAIL Den Helder is an event that has been held every five years since 1993, usually simultaneously with the Navy Days. The entire history of (inter)national seafaring is practically board-to-board on display then. From windjammers or tallships that had the wind in their sails centuries ago, to modern frigates and submarines that show their newest techniques here. The latter was also done by Van Schie with its newest type of pontoon bridge.
Bridge with a green edge
As for operating the bridge, this can be done with a specially developed electric drive unit, which can be connected to both shore power and a battery pack. In this way, the bridge can be operated emission-free, which is especially important in inner-city areas. In short, a pontoon bridge that is calculated for the future.
