A20 noise barrier

The construction of the so-called L-screen, the first part of the noise barrier along the A20 is progressing well. In recent weeks, 50 foundation piles with a length of 14 meters have been “vibrated” into the ground and now the first coconut screens have also been installed. The L-shaped screen of about 170 meters in length and 6.5 meters in height is expected to be completed within 3 weeks.

The work is being carried out by Kokosystems of Poeldijk and Van Schie on behalf of the municipality of Maassluis. With the realization of the L-screen, noise from the highway decreases directly so that residents in the area can benefit.

People’s Gardens

At the nearby allotment complex, two gardeners had to move to another site. This was done in consultation with the association and gardeners. Anne Langedijk, president of the association comments: “The impact is quite significant. Not only for the gardeners who have to move, but also for the gardeners who lose the clear view and now face a 6.5-meter-high screen. The board of the Flight Hill is very pleased with how the whole process has gone.

Compliments to the project leaders who made sure that everything went smoothly. The lines of communication were short, which we found very pleasant. Kudos also to the City Corporation who, with great effort and care, handled the adjustments to the gardens and the relocation of the properties.”

Construction second section of noise barrier

Van Schie and Kokosystems of Poeldijk will also perform the work for the Kastanjedal-Doornenbuurt section. According to Alderman Fred Voskamp, a good connection of the screens was an important starting point: “The noise barrier at Kastanjedal and Doornenbuurt is about 510 meters long and the screens are 3.5 meters high. The noise barriers (so-called top screens) will be placed on top of the 3-meter high, already existing noise barrier. The noise barrier of a total height of 6.5 meters connects to the L-screen. The appearance is the same so that a unified image is created along the entire length.” The start of construction is expected immediately after the 2021 construction season.

Environment is involved

That the noise barriers are being built is partly the result of intensive input from resident representatives, local residents and other stakeholders. Local residents will also remain closely involved and extensively informed during implementation.
