There is a reason our slogan is “continuously in motion”. Even when there is a thick layer of snow on the ground.

Some projects simply cannot be postponed, such as the SPARK high-rise development in the heart of Utrecht. Construction is taking place in a complex location: above the covering of a tramway, right next to a busy cycle path and directly alongside the railway line to Utrecht Central Station. On a site like this, every delay has an immediate impact on through traffic.

The SPARK project consists of three high-rise blocks and a park pavilion. Two of the buildings will contain 106 owner-occupied homes and 61 rental apartments. The third building is intended for offices, hospitality, culture and fitness. There will also be an underground car park with space for 76 vehicles.

The location at Smakkelaarsveld is unique: right next to Hoog Catharijne shopping centre, with direct access to public transport, shops and culture.

Ice-cold and rock-solid

The three SPARK buildings, each thirteen storeys high, are set to become a recognisable landmark thanks to their striking design, sharp angles and aluminium façades.

An important milestone in the construction process was the installation of two enormous steel trusses above the tramway, weighing 38 and 12 tonnes respectively. Van Schie Kraanverhuur carried out this operation in freezing conditions using two telescopic cranes: an LTM 1150-5 and an LTM 1230-5.

The result was a series of impressive images, with the snow creating an almost picturesque setting. Completion of the first homes is planned for the end of 2027. The entire construction project is being carried out by Vink Bouw B.V. from Nieuwkoop.
