More and more buildings are getting their energy from geothermal energy, as an alternative to wind and solar power. As a rule, this is water pumped from the depths of our earth. The heat in that water can then be used for heating or generating electricity. It is a sustainable heat source that does not rely on solar or wind. And always available.

To encounter sufficient heat, it is necessary to drill at least 200 meters deep, but usually much deeper. The same thing happened in Amsterdam-Buitenveldert. At four locations around the UMC, Van Schie has installed so-called “casing tubes” to enable drilling at great depths.

A casing is a hollow steel tube that is pushed into the ground while rotating, vibration-free and low-noise! This case involved two tubes of 13 meters each that were welded together and then pressed into the ground, a principle that is particularly used in inner-city areas or close to monumental buildings where pile vibration is absolutely not permissible.
