It happened near Hellendoorn, the village that had just been declared the happiest place in the Netherlands. With the bridge over the Regge River, the residents were unfortunately out of luck. The bicycle bridge – right on the border between Twente and Salland – was already in poor condition due to overdue maintenance, but after overloading and harsh weather conditions, the wooden structure finally had to give in.

The bridge is located in the nature reserve De Tatums, through which also runs the famous Pieterpad. It is an important link in the network of bicycle routes in this region. Hence the need for a temporary emergency bridge as soon as possible. Contractor Van Heteren, the local specialist in water works, immediately knew who to call. Van Schie has ready-made solutions for this kind of calamity: steel modular bridge systems, which work as a kind of construction kit. Within a day, such a bridge can be in place, complete with fences, ramps and an anti-slip deck. This temporary bridge at Hellendoorn was almost forty meters long. Van Schie’s men pre-assembled all the sections. Van Heteren prepared everything on site, placed the supports and assembled the bridge.
