At the beginning of this year, a pontoon bridge lay across the Merwede Canal as a temporary replacement for maintenance on Arkel’s Rijksstraatweg bridge.

A beautiful picture. Early this year this pontoon bridge was over the Merwedekanaal, a waterway that is fifty meters wide here. It is a bicycle and pedestrian bridge, which had to partially replace Arkel’s Rijksstraatweg bridge, because this swing bridge was out of service for major maintenance for several weeks. Van Schie’s pontoon bridge – a temporary facility that can be installed within a day – is fully certified and composed of stable VSP770 pontoons. It is equipped with a non-skid deck, navigation lights, lifebuoys and access bollards on both sides of the bridge. Only ambulance service vehicles have a key to these red and white bollards. Other motor vehicles – in this case – are not allowed to use them.
